NAS for CCTV systems based on Pixord and TP-Link cameras
Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a hardware solution (device) allowing connection of hard drives to a computer network, having a specific IP address. The access to the resources is possible from virtually anywhere in the network (including the Internet) via a web browser. After mapping, the NAS can be used by the computers in the network similarly to a physically connected hard drive.
After mapping, the NAS units are visible in the operating system (Windows XP) as W and X network drives
NAS Servers enable data archiving in Windows and Unix systems, using e.g. SAMBA or NFS protocols. The total size of memory allocated for data recording depends on the capacity of the hard drives used, their number and the type of RAID array. The type of the RAID array is connected with the selected mode of work:
- backup of data (for increased reliability of the system),
- acceleration of data transmission,
- disk space extension.
In addition to features such as remote backup of video surveillance data, running FTP or web servers, NAS servers are used in IP CCTV systems as NVRs (network video recorders).
The overall configuration of both the cameras and server is performed via a web browser, and the video recording process does not require any additional software. It is an important advantage for video surveillance systems, which lowers installation and maintenance costs, eliminating the need to purchase expensive power-hungry servers or external services.
DIPOL offers the following IP cameras cooperating with NAS servers:
After having set up the NAS server and parameters such as IP address, recording path (folder), user name and password, the user may start recording of the data streams coming from the IP cameras.
Configuring TP-Link K1155 camera for network recording
The entire configuration of the camera for cooperation with a NAS server and the application of recording rules is performed in Setting -> Advanced -> Network Storage window.
In the Network storage -> General window, the Protocol dialog box is used to choose Windows network (SMB/CIFS) or UNIX network (NFS).
The Network storage location box is used to choose the recording folder previously created on NAS. Due to security reasons and ease of access, each camera should have a separate folder. The format of the path name is as follows:
\IP_address-folder name e.g. \192.168.0.100www
Workgroup - name of the of the previously created workgroup containing the NAS (e.g. mygroup).

The Workgroup name entry
The User name and Password fields are used to authorize the connection between the camera and NAS server. This protects against unauthorized preview, deleting the data etc. In the case of TP-Link cameras, the default username and password is admin. After the first logging on, the user should change the password.
Proper operation can be checked using the Test button.
The NAS gets Period and Alarm folders. If everything went correctly, a message about successful completion of the test shows up and the user should click on the Close button.

Alarm action configuration is performed in Setting -> Advanced -> Network storage -> Alarm sending window. The alarm options include Motion detection, Audio detection, Network link down. The Recording time field allows the user to select the required Recording time for the events. Another option is the Effective period - Always or according to a Schedule.

Description of options:
- Motion detection - the user can create three detection windows. If some motion occurs in any active window, the video is saved on the NAS. The detection can be applied on a continuous basis or in accordance with a schedule. There are pre-alarm (max. 5 s) and post-alarm (max. 5 s) buffers.
- Audio detection - the built-in microphone of the camera listens for sounds above a predefined level. Such sounds trigger recording on the NAS. There are pre-alarm (max. 5 s) and post-alarm (max. 5 s) buffers.
Recording Schedule limits the activity of motion and audio detection to specified periods. The user can set the active periods for each day of the week and approve each setting by pressing Add. After completion, the modifications should be confirmed with OK.
- Schedule - limits the continuous activity (when alarm events trigger recording of 1-50 MB files) to defined periods of each day of the week.
Periodical recording, also based on a schedule, is performed in defined periods, independently from detection of alarm events.
The recorded material is saved on the NVR in the form of 1-50 MB files with .avi extension, which can be played with multiple video players, e.g. VLC.
Configuring Pixord cameras for network recording
The configuration of PIXORD cameras for cooperation with a NAS server and the application of recording rules is performed in Setup -> Schedule -> Storage -> Remote Disk Setting window.
The Action box activates or deactivates connection with NAS server (Mount means active connection).
The Type box is used for selecting the appropriate protocol: SMBFS for Windows network or NFS for Unix network.
Remote Disk Path - the IP address of the NAS server should be provided in the following format: IP_address-folder e.g. 192.168.0.100\album. Notice! In the case of Pixord cameras no backslash is used before the IP address.
The User Name and Password fields are used to authorize the connection between the camera and NAS server. This protects against unauthorized preview, deleting the data etc. The default username and password is admin. After the first logging on, the user should change the password.
All the settings are confirmed with the Save button.
Modes of recording:
- Motion Detection - the user can create up to ten detection windows. If some motion occurs in any active window, the video is saved on the NAS.
After configuring the motion detection windows, the next step is configuration of the recording on the NAS drive:
- Name - the name of an event e.g. "NewEvent",
- the minimum time between trigger events,
- the time of activity (with response to the events) - similarly to the TP-Link camera there is "Always" option and a programmable schedule,
- Trigger by - "Motion Detection",
- In Window - selecting active window(s),
- activation of Upload Images option,
- Select Upload Type - "Disk" (it means the NAS drive),
- Base File Name - the first part of the required file name, e.g. "images" (the second part is added automatically and includes the date/time of the event).
- Schedule - can limit the continuous activity (when alarm events trigger recording of 50-1000 MB files) to defined periods of each day of the week.
The video files with .h264 extension can have size from 50 to 1000 MB and can be played by multiple video players, e.g. VLC.
